"Painting People from Photos"
with Mark Lague
April 16, 17 and 18, 2010
Cost: $350
Class Description:
In this workshop you will learn to incorporate people into your paintings. Using candid photos of people in their natural environment, we will explore the compositional possibilities of people in groups or individually.
We will also focus on gesture drawing, and how to simplify the human form. Once you are able to see people as a series of shapes and values, you will realise that painting people is no more difficult than painting a tree or a flower. Its really all about painting what you see and not what you know (or what you think you know), that will lead to much stronger paintings.

Plein Air Painting in Oils
with Jennifer Smith Rogers
May 14, 15 and 16, 2010
Cost: $350
Class Description:
For me, to paint plein air is simply to react to what I see. Workshop will involve painting cityscapes and landscapes alla prima style where the goal is to paint from start to finish in one sitting. Emphasis will be on color, value and composition as well as capturing a sense of light. Depending on the weather, we may paint in the studio from a photograph so plan to bring your own photos. Instruction will include demos, individual attention and possibly group critiques.

"Perfecting Your Voice"
with Larry Moore
September 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2010
(Evening Demo on the 16th from 6-9pm)
Cost: $400
Class Information: This workshop is designed to help artists find and perfect their own voice, to think with paint. The fundamentals will be covered, but painting is more than fundamentals. The voice of the artist comes from these things: color, shape, edge, brush work, style and concept. It's the individual voice of the artist that separates him/her from the rest. Through a series of exercises we will explore different ways to utilize the foundations of painting to push our work and in the process becoming your own best critic for both painting en plein air and in the studio. Larry will utilize his 18 years as an instructor, 30 years experience as an illustrator and graphic designer, and over 30 years experience as a fine artist to educate and inform. Come with an open mind and a sense of humor.
About the Artist: Larry was born in 1957 and raised in Cocoa Beach, Florida. When his family first began to recognize his talent, he was a tender nine. First drawing, then painting, then surfing. At age 14, Larry had already combined his passion for nature and surfing with his gift. He began airbrushing surfboards, vans and wall murals. Since then, Larry's success has been rapid. The mass of awards listed below gives clear witness to his position among the country's leading artists. Larry has been awarded the highest national and international honors. To date, over 30 pieces of art have been accepted into the Society of Illustrators in New York and Los Angeles. Recently, he was awarded the Society's most prestigious honor, a gold award. Without pretension, Larry attributes his success to passion, hard work and problem solving; a technique he learned as an illustrator. Since 1993, Larry has taught illustrating, drawing, creative thinking and oil and pastel workshops. In front of the classroom, he is known as an instructor, role model and mentor. Time and time again, Larry has helped promote young artists to heights they never dreamed of reaching so soon. Perhaps this ability to nurture came from the support of his family. Growing up surrounded by talent, Larry's mother, grandmother, brother and stepmother were all artists. Larry remembers clearly the day he discovered plein air painting. From that moment, he knew exactly what he wanted to do: Combine his experience, his passion for nature and his life-long goal of becoming a better painter. "It's all about the learning journey." Larry Moore.

OIL PAINTING WITH MAGGIE
SINER:
NEW APPROACHES TO COMPOSITION
MARCH 6 - 8, 2009 -- LIMIT: 15 STUDENTS -- COST: $300
Workshop Description: "Composition is essential in the creation of
a good painting. It creates expression, structure and finally, meaning in
painting. The pictorial principles of composition involve much more than
a system of rules or the simple placement of objects. In fact, the best
compositions manage to break all the rules! Composition concerns the entire
relationship of parts to the whole, from individual brushstrokes to the largest
shapes, including all inner dynamics at work inside the rectangle. In this
workshop we will explore compositional ideas governing the use of color,
the organization of value; manipulation of pictorial space; and the role
of mark-making. Students will gain new ideas, insight and skill in composition."
-Maggie Siner
Schedule: Friday, March 6 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm; Saturday & Sunday,
March 7 & 8 - 9:00am - 4:00pm.

be asked to bring their own photo reference to work from; the subject matter
can be portrait, landscape, interior figurative etc. Please plan on
bringing an original photograph that has not been taken with
an on-camera flash; if using a digital image, feel free to bring a laptop

"PAINTING THE FIGURE FROM A
PHOTOGRAPH"
FIGURATIVE WORKSHOP WITH BARBARA FLOWERS
OCTOBER 10 - 12, 2008 -- LIMIT: 15 STUDENTS -- COST: $300
Class information:
In this workshop we will work on translating what we see in our photo to
what works with paint. Please bring a photo you are excited about - in advance
you may study and determine what it is that inspires you to paint the photo,
so you will have somewhat of a concept in your mind for class. Preferrably
,chosen images should not be of a personal nature (i.e. not of family or
close friends) as participants typically get much more out of the workshop
if the images are not too personal. Also, in preparation for class you may
wish to prepare a drawing of the photo (this is not a requirement, but it
will help you understand the photo). If you need some suggestions on image
selection, feel free to call the Studio at 804-358-2771 for more guidelines.
Barbara Flowers will also be bringing images that participants may
also utilize during the class.
Schedule:
Day One: Painting demo (painting the figure from a photo); Lunch;
Students paint (we will work on a study piece today). Please bring your favorite
photo of a figure to paint - nothing too busy. On this day you will do a
small pencil or charcoal sketch of your painting and a quick oil sketch to
work out colors.
Day Two: Students paint; Lunch; Paint until 3pm and then we will have
a group critique.
Day Three: Students paint; Final group critique.

Levels: beginning to advanced
This class will explore the emotional and intellectual aspects of painting
with an emphasis on how to create not just a painting but an artwork. The
main focus will be on interpreting the subject matter, selecting the "right"
theme and creating a painting with compelling content. The expressive power

and to represent form. We will also study the time tested principles of painting:
composition, values, color and edges. Students will receive personal
attention including individual and group instruction, critiques and
demonstrations.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING
WORKSHOP WITH PAULA FRIZBE
APRIL 3 - 5, 2008 -- LIMIT: 15 STUDENTS
Class information:
How can we make a painting say what we want it to say? What is the painting
about? How do we answer these very important questions with the painting
tools we have available? This three day course is designed to emphasis
the basic elements of good painting. The three building blocks we will
concentrate on are: Value, Color and Composition. How do these three important
elements work together and how can we learn to control each element to see
the big picture
Value - The structure of the value masses in a painting is what holds
the painting together. It is the backbone on any painting, without good value
structure, the painting will not read. You will not be able to create space
and separate planes.
Color - In painting, there is no such thing as a muddy color, only
color that has not been properly identified and placed in the painting.
Composition - Strive for simplicity of design. If you look at works
of art that are generally considered masters, you will find that they are
usually very simple in design.
