Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, founder of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, passed away earlier this March. I had the pleasure of meeting and painting her twice.
Her full-length portrait was acquired by the museum's board of directors and hangs in perpetuity in the lobby of the NMWA.
Her second portrait hangs in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, where it was donated in her honor when she was awarded the 2006 Wetmore Leadership in the Fine Arts Award by the Portrait Society of America.
Wilhelmina wouldn’t accept that her portrait be done by a man and asked for me, a female member of the Portrait Society, to paint her.
She was one of the most gracious and fascinating people I’ve met. She had a vision and it was a good one. Try to visit the National Museum of Women in the Arts next time you are in Washington, DC or visit their website for more information: https://nmwa.org/
